SpellDoctor SI (Strategic Initiative) has all the capabilities of SpellDoctor Basic with the addition of some powerful new features. For each word in a lesson, the program allows the teacher to present roots, root meanings, rules, self-composed strategies, or any combination thereof. With SpellDoctor SI, each Captured Word becomes a “clickable event.” Clicking on a Captured Word in the Lesson Set-Up Window triggers the following procedure:
1. Identify the Target Word -The teacher uses a standard spell checker interface to identify the exact target word represented by the student’s spelling.
2. Choose the Best Strategy or Strategies to Teach the Word – Knowing the Target Word, the teacher can construct a lesson using the following tools:
• Roots Database- SpellDoctor SI includes over 600 Latin and Greek roots, suffixes, and prefixes to assign to a word. Advanced search tools make locating the correct root quick and easy. Multiple spellings of each root are available. All selections include the associated meaning.
• Rules Data Base - SpellDoctor SI includes a complete database of common English spelling rules.
• Write Your Own Strategy - This feature allows the teacher to quickly write a strategy, trick, or reminder to the student.
3. Preview the Strategy or Strategies - Once selections are made, the teacher can preview exactly how the lesson will appear to the student.
Never set up a strategy twice!
All teacher strategies created in SpellDoctor SI are automatically saved for future use. If the same word comes up again in a future lesson for any student, a flag in the Lesson Set-Up screen indicates that a strategy is “on file.” At this point the teacher can simply assign the word, or edit the strategy as needed.
Strategies can also be set up for Curriculum and Cross-Curriculum words.
